I’m Dr. Christian Guier. I work with Florida Eye Specialists, and I see a variety of patients for a variety of eye care needs. Most recently, I’m spending a lot of time working with patients who’ve had the most advanced technology in cataract surgery: the Light Adjustable Lens.
The Light Adjustable Lens is spectacular. It’s an intraocular lens. When people have cataract surgery, we remove the opaque proteins within the lens and place a clear implant in their eye, and so right off the bat we have better quality of vision. Changes are made after the lens is in that meet the patient’s needs and expectations — they actually are in charge of how we make those changes, and to what extent. With the Light Adjustable Lens, we place this implant within the eye, and after two weeks’ time we are able to make adjustments to the power of the lens, really tuning their vision for optimal distance correction, or even a blending of distance and near vision.
What patients do like is that they’re kind of not stuck with what they got. After cataract surgery, they can come in and say, ‘Oh boy, it seems a little off balance,’ and we can tune the lenses so that balance is regained and they’re obtaining the quality of vision that they like. They get to try it — usually I’ll see people back in a week’s time, the changes we made with the Light Delivery Device have kicked in, and they’re able to live in their life: not just reading black letters on a white background in a dim room like the doctor’s office, but they get to live in their neighborhood, go to work, go golfing or to the beach, and enjoy what they do and see how their quality of vision works with them.
Getting it to work requires that we first have each cataract surgery done, and that’s done very much like regular cataract surgery — it’s an outpatient surgery. We do wait about 17 days after the second eye is done, and once that second eye is done, we’re able to come in and make the adjustments using UV light. It’s not laser or chemicals; it’s UV light that makes the changes to the lens. We have a device called the Light Delivery Device that delivers the proper extent and orientation of light to the lens to change its configuration, which changes the power — and that’s what clarifies the focus. We do those changes in office, people go home and sleep in their own bed at night, it takes about two or three days for those effects to kick in, and then people will call back and say, ‘Wow, I’m seeing even better now.’
