Hi, I’m Dr. Ravi Patel, a board-certified cataract and cornea eye surgeon. I’m here today to discuss Eye Injury Prevention Month, which is October, to raise awareness about preventable eye injuries. Like other injuries, an eye injury can cause devastating long-term effects. Vision is one of the most precious gifts we have, so please do all you can to preserve it. Unfortunately, injuries are one of the leading causes of blindness, and most eye injuries occur at home, so it’s important to keep you and your family safe.

What are some things you can do to prevent eye injuries? Well, when working with chemicals, read all the warnings carefully and understand what to do if you get that chemical in your eye. Always wear protective eyewear when working with chemicals or materials that can harm the eye, such as when working in the garage, the yard, or in the home. Ideally, have at least one pair of approved protective eyewear in the home. Be mindful of sharp objects, debris, and flying objects, and wear safety glasses. You should always reach out to a healthcare professional about any concern you may have regarding an eye injury. Remember, here at Florida Eye Specialists, we’re always here for your eye care needs, so please feel free to contact us for an appointment at any time. This October, have fun, stay safe, take care, and don’t forget your protective eyewear.
