Macular degeneration is a condition that causes the retina to deteriorate over time, and that ultimately causes loss of vision. We don’t know exactly what causes it, but we know that it tends to occur in people over age 55, and often in those with a family history of the disease. People often have a history of smoking — that’s a major risk factor — as well as high blood pressure. Sometimes people develop bleeding and swelling along with it, and that requires special treatment. So if you have a family history, it’s important to get periodic exams to make sure nothing’s missed.
