Routine eye exams are crucial for detecting early signs of vision problems and eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. In this video, Dr. Kimberly Riordan of Florida Eye Specialists answers one of the most common questions: “How often should I get an eye exam?” She explains how exam frequency varies depending on age, health history, and existing conditions like diabetes or dry eye syndrome.
Dr. Riordan emphasizes the importance of annual eye exams for adults over 60 and more frequent exams for those with risk factors. Viewers will learn the differences between a routine eye check-up and a comprehensive eye exam—and how these appointments can safeguard long-term vision.

We recommend an eye exam every two years for patients aged 18 to 60 in good health. For patients who are higher risk — what I mean by that is patients with diabetes or other medical conditions, or who may have a family history of glaucoma — we may recommend you come in annually, or even more often than that. And for those aged 61 and above, we recommend an annual eye exam.
