Frequently Asked Questions
Will insurance cover functional eyelid surgery?
It depends. Insurance typically does not cover cosmetic procedures, but it may cover eyelid surgery if drooping or puffiness is affecting your field of vision. A visual field exam is often required to determine whether the surgery is medically necessary. Our oculoplastic surgeons and cosmetic consultants can help you review your benefits and understand your options.
How long is downtime?
Downtime after eyelid surgery is typically more annoying than painful. Most patients take about 7–10 days to rest and recover. Your oculoplastic surgeon will create a personalized recovery plan for your procedure.
What is the difference between functional and cosmetic procedures?
Functional procedures are medical treatments performed to improve and protect your vision and overall eye health, such as repairing droopy eyelids that impair vision. They are often covered by insurance. Cosmetic procedures, such as Botox® or a brow lift, focus on appearance rather than function and are usually not covered by insurance.
Will I look “different” after eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery can refresh your appearance and boost your confidence, but it will not drastically change the way you look. Our surgeons focus on natural results to enhance, not alter, your features. You will still look like yourself, just more rested and awake.
When can I wear makeup again?
Recovery times vary, but our oculoplastic surgeons generally recommend avoiding makeup on or near the surgical area for about two weeks after surgery. This gives the skin time to heal properly.
